Introduction

Electricity is a key energy carrier in the energy transition. Electrification is the dominant pathway towards sustainability in several sectors such as transportation and heat supply, both for industry and the built environment. Consequently, electricity is widely seen as enabler for the energy transition. At the same time, at many locations the transition is proceeding too quickly for system operators. Although current grid investments are at unprecedented levels, network capacity shortages are currently more the rule than the exception.

In this webinar, we will view this theme from three different angles. First, we will examine the current challenges in the electricity grid and how grid operators are rapidly innovating to cope with them. Subsequently, we will consider the innovations needed to keep electricity reliable and affordable in the long term. Finally, we will look into the legal framework needed to achieve the ambitious sustainability targets required for the energy transition.
