Time, impermanence and imperfection are central themes in his designs and artworks. His fascination with these themes does not stem from a need to shock but from a desire to pursue a direct, 'pure' way of designing and making art.

Baas has enjoyed international recognition since graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002. In 2004, the influential Moss Gallery in New York asked him to create a solo exhibition, Where There's Smoke..., consisting of 25 burnt design classics, including furniture by Rietveld, Sottsass, Gaudi and Thonet. In 2009, Baas won the Dutch Design Award and was chosen by an international jury as Designer of the Year, the first Dutch national to win this prize. His objects and work can be viewed in many museums, galleries and exhibitions worldwide, including the MoMA in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 2023, the Voorlinden Museum in Wassenaar hosted his solo exhibition It's About Time.
