Barbara Visser's (born 1966) photographs, videos and installations are characterised by disrupting patterns of expectation.
She uses alienation from and the alienation of reality in her work in a very personal way, and with great visual conviction. Among other things, she attracted attention with a photo series (The World Belongs to Early Risers, 2002) showing a seaside visitor enjoying the sun a short distance from the body of a refugee who has washed up on shore.
Different realities, originals and copies are recurring themes in Visser’s oeuvre. Her work can be found in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem, the Haagse Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. Barbara Visser has received several awards, including the David Röell Prize (2007) and the Dr A.H. Heineken Prize for the Arts (2008).
