De Châtel studied at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen and began her dance career with choreographer Koert Stuyf. She founded her own group, Dansgroep Krisztina de Châtel, in 1976. She served as artistic director of Dansgroep Amsterdam from 2009 to 2013 and in that year began creating special choreographies under the name De Châtel sur Place.

In her work, she pits fragile human bodies against the forces of nature or places them in imposing spaces. She also distinguishes herself through her community art projects. She has, for instance, created performances with fire-fighters, sanitation workers and people with mental health issues and now pursues this work through the Imperium Foundation, which provides support to talented young choreographers, for example in the form of the De Châtel Award.

She has received an award for her choreography from the Nederlandse Dansdagen (2000) as well as the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts (2010), the Gouden Zwaan prize (2010), and many others.
