Writer and poet Piet Gerbrandy (1958) has published a dozen collections of poetry and many essays on poetry, rhetoric and Greek and Latin classics. He is also on the editorial board of De Gids and the Flemish magazine Poëziekrant.

Gerbrandy started writing essays for the weekly De Groene Amsterdammer in 1993. In 1996 he began reviewing poetry for newspaper de Volkskrant and in 2007 he published his book on Latin literary history, Het feest van Saturnus. De literatuur van het heidense Rome. 

Gerbrandy studied classical languages and comparative Indo-European linguistics in Leiden from 1976 to 1984. He then taught secondary school for over 20 years and co-authored several textbooks for pupils taking their final exam in Greek. Since 2006, he has taught Classical and Medieval Latin language and literature at the University of Amsterdam. He also lectures elsewhere within the faculty. His research focuses on Latin poetry of Late Antiquity. 

Gerbrand’s translations from Greek and Latin include Marcus Fabius Quintilianus' Institutio Oratoria (2001) and Boëthius' De consolatione philosophiae (2019).
