Jaarlijks stelt het NIAS-KNAW onderzoeksfaciliteiten ter beschikking aan zo'n veertig tot vijftig vooraanstaande onderzoekers uit binnen- en buitenland. Naast onderzoekers met een individueel project zijn er multidisciplinaire thematische onderzoeksprogramma's. Zowel Nederlandse als buitenlandse onderzoekers nemen hieraan deel. Daarnaast biedt het NIAS faciliteiten voor conferenties en workshops.

Introduction
Het Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS-KNAW) heeft twee belangrijke taken:
- Het instituut bevordert hoogwaardig onderzoek in het gehele veld van de mens-, maatschappij- en gedragswetenschappen
- Het instituut stimuleert internationale kennisuitwisseling en interdisciplinaire samenwerking in onderzoek
