The fellowship offers talented artists active in any artistic discipline the opportunity to work on a project in an international and interdisciplinary academic setting.

About the Artist-in-Residence Fellowship

The Artist-in-Residence Fellowship was established to highlight the value of the arts for society and to restore the close relationship that existed between the arts and the sciences in the nineteenth century. We believe that cross-fertilisation between artistic creativity and the structured underpinnings of science and scholarship will strengthen the ties between them and trigger novel approaches and insights.

NIAS and the Society of Arts co-fund a five-month (one-semester) residential fellowship every year, giving artists an opportunity to share ideas with scholars and scientists working in the humanities, the social sciences and other disciplines. The residency allows the artist in question to examine the theoretical aspects of a specific subject in-depth.

Practical information

NIAS and the Society of Arts offer one five-month fellowship a year.

The fellowship is meant for

  • 1) artists of any nationality who live and work in the Netherlands and
  • 2) artists who are Dutch nationals and live either in the Netherlands or abroad.

The fellowship includes either a studio flat (or, depending on the fellow’s official place of residence, an equal commuting allowance), a personal office (not an artist’s studio), daily lunch, and research facilities (computer, library services etc.).

Fellows are eligible to receive a stipend to compensate (in part) for loss of earnings during the fellowship.

Application and selection

Note: The language of communication at NIAS and during the residency is English.

Applications and nominations are not being accepted at this time.

Members of the Society of Arts may apply for the fellowship on their own behalf; other candidates must be nominated by a member of Society of Arts, the Royal Academy or The Young Academy.

The NIAS director and the Society of Arts chairperson will select the winning candidate.
