Introduction

The KNAW Van der Gaag Grant helps young behavioural researchers cover the cost of a research project or working visit abroad. A KNAW Van der Gaag Grant consists of a cash sum not exceeding EUR 10,000.

Who is it for?

Applicants must be PhD candidates or researchers who obtained their PhD no more than four years previously.

About the KNAW Van Der Gaag Grant 

The KNAW Van der Gaag Grant is financed by the Van der Gaag Fund, which is now part of the KNAW Fund for Behavioural Research. The purpose of the KNAW Fund for Behavioural Research is to promote outstanding behavioural research.

The Academy established the KNAW Van der Gaag Grant in 2014 to support outstanding and promising, socially relevant research into the biological, psychological and/or social determinants of human behaviour. Applications may be submitted every other year. The grant consists of a cash sum not exceeding EUR 10,000.

  • Gerben van Kleef has held an endowed chair in the 'Social and organisational-psychological aspects of prosocial behaviour' at the University of Amsterdam from 1 April 2012 to 1 May 2016. After completion of his Van der Gaag chair, Gerben van Kleef was appointed professor of Social Psychology at the University of Amsterdam.
  • Judith Dubas has held an endowed chair in the 'Developmental psychology aspects of prosocial behaviour' at Utrecht University from 1 November 2012 to 1 November 2017. After completion of her Van der Gaag chair, Judith Dubas was appointed professor of Prosocial Development Across The Life Span at Utrecht University.
  • René Bekkers has held an endowed chair in the 'Sociological aspects of prosocial behaviour' at VU University Amsterdam from 1 January 2013 to 1 January 2018. René Bekkers is professor at the Sociology Department, VU University Amsterdam from July 2018.
  • Liesbeth Sterck has held an endowed chair in the 'Behavioural ecological determinants of prosocial behaviour' at Utrecht University from 1 April 2013 – 1 April 2018. In 2018 Utrecht University appointed her Professor of Ecological Determinants of Behavior.
