French climate researcher Sandrine Bony will receive this year’s Buys Ballot Medal from the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been awarded this prize in recognition of her pioneering research on the role of clouds in the climate system, and specifically in climate change.
How do clouds interact with large scale circulation patterns, how are they changing in a warming climate, and will they mitigate further climate change or in fact make it worse? Sandrine Bony will receive the Buys Ballot Medal during a symposium at the Academy in Amsterdam. We are excited to invite you to this event celebrating excellence in meteorology and climate change research.
Programme
- Award ceremony - Laudatio by Guido van der Werf, chair of the jury Buys Ballot medal 2023 and professor Natural Fires and Carbon Cycle at Wageningen University, followed by the formal presentation of the medal to Sandrine Bony
- The story of clouds in climate research, Bjorn Stevens, Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Hamburg
- A story of cloud organisation, keynote lecture by Sandrine Bony, laureate of the Buys Ballot medal 2023, researcher at the Sorbonne University Paris and research director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS)
Discussion with audience participation - The role of fundamental climate science in an era of global warming
