The number of medical technology devices, already around half a million, will only increase in the future. New medical technology, before being used in the clinic or at home, must be thoroughly assessed on numerous aspects.
An authorisation procedure shouldn't be so complicated that the introduction of valuable medical devices takes too long. A KNAW committee explored how stakeholders can choose the most 'appropriate' evaluation method, depending on the type of medical technology.
The report Evaluation of new technology in health care offers the various parties involved concrete tools to choose the method of research that best suits the medical device in question, also considering the evaluation after market introduction. The report makes it clear that a one-size-fits-all approach is not workable and different evaluation routes are therefore possible.
