Where can I find the requirements and guidelines for application?

What requirements must a research proposal meet?
Content

Part of the application is a project description written by the candidate, including the proposed research, title, activities and intended results.

Proposals will be assessed for:

  • A clearly formulated research question in line with the objectives of the programme.
  • The added value of a residency at NIAS.
  • Feasibility of the project.
  • A clearly specified work plan, research method and expected result.
  • A good command of the English language, as this is the working language of the fellowship.

Who is eligible?

  • Dutch artists who work in the Netherlands or abroad, or
  • Non-Dutch artists who live and work in the Netherlands

Members of the Society of Arts can apply themselves; other candidates must be nominated by a member of Society of Arts, KNAW or Young Academy.

What is the deadline for applying for the 2025-2026 residency?

Applying for the Artist-in-Residence programme is possible from 15 January to 17 March 2025, 12:00 noon.

When is the period of stay at NIAS?
Content

For the 2025-2026 residency, the artist will stay at NIAS in Amsterdam from February 2026 to June 2026.

Is it possible to start the residency period at NIAS at another time?
Content

No. The residency period is fixed so that all fellows are present at the same time during their research.

Should the research proposal I submit be written in Dutch or English?

All documents (CV, motivation letter, research proposal, recommendation letter) must be written in English.

What does the Artist-in-Residence fellowship consist of?
Content
  • A stipend of € 3200 per month.
  • Temporary housing close to the NIAS or an allowance to cover travel between the fellow’s place of residence in the Netherlands and the NIAS (public transport, 2nd class travel or a fixed mileage allowance)
  • Temporary offices, IT and library facilities and lunches at the NIAS There are no artist’s studios available
  • A travel allowance (economy class) for return travel between the artist’s home abroad and the Netherlands
  • Fellows are responsible for paying tax to the Tax and Customs Administration of the Netherlands (Belastingdienst) or to the tax authorities of the country in which they are liable to pay tax

Does the residency include a studio?

No, this residency offers a place for theoretical study and includes facilities such as an office and library.

What is the working language during the residency?
Content

A good command of the English language is needed, as this is the main language of the fellowship.

If I am not selected, will I receive a substantive explanation of the choice?

No, there will be no correspondence on the motivation of the selection committee's choice.

If I don't know a member of the Society of Arts, KNAW or The Young Academy personally, how do I get in touch with someone?

The Society of Arts does not provide contact information of members of the Society of Arts/ KNAW/ The Young Academy. It is the candidate's own responsibility to get in touch with a member for fellowship nomination.

When should I present my research results?
Content

The aim of this fellowship is to conduct an in-depth theoretical study of an artistic project, and then develop it into a final product such as, for example, an essay, film or concept.

During the residency, all fellows at NIAS share the progress of their research among themselves one by one during weekly seminars.

At the end of the residency at NIAS, the result of the research must be made accessible to the public. This can be done through a presentation, seminar, publication or other activity at the Society of Arts.
